Day 3

Time : 9:00 am

Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast drive through the Kigezi region; well know as the “Switzerland of Africa”, to the magnificent Lake Bunyonyi. This lake is a result of lava flow from one of the Virunga Mountains, which blocked off the Ndego River at present-day Muko to create a natural dam. Dotted with at least 20 small islands and encircled by steep terraced hills, Bunyonyi is a magical spot. Bilharzia is reliably reported to be absent from the lake, as are crocodiles and hippos, which means swimming is very safe. Active travelers are catered for, with kayaks, canoes, and mountain bikes available for hire, and enough potential excursions to keep one busy for days.
Uganda Safaris
Bunyonyi translates as ‘place of little birds’, which refers to the prolific weaver colonies along its shores, but larger birds are also represented by the likes of grey-crowned crane and a variety of herons and egrets. It is probably the best place in Africa to see otters – the diurnal spotted-necked otter in particular – with several pairs resident around Rutinda and nearby islands. Dinner and overnight at Arcadia Cottages (FB)
